Aaytha Siragugal - WHISTLE - Open Session
June 30, 2019
Madurai
It's a Sunday, normally on Sundays after a work loaded weekdays we prefer to keep Sunday for resting and relaxing. Everything will be happening slowly on Sundays, we will be waking up lately after having deep sleep then have our coffee, may have or skip our breakfast and go into lunch directly. On a whole it would be like a pretty lazy and not do anything day. But for us, Aaytha Siragugal, the weekends are not like that. We keep knocking the doors of the schools, children home and trust, visit deep rural and interior areas to conduct session on Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). This way we keep awaring the children, parents and teachers on CSA to develop a child friendly society. On one such weekend we planned to conduct open session on prevention of child sexual abuse. This is for the first time we made an announcement for open session and were putting our efforts since last two months for this grand event. Everyone of us - Vigneshwaran, Sharathkumar, Sivaraman, Indrakumar, Revathi, Aaron, Nirosha, Ravichandrika, Rohini, Ratnakumar, Arvindkumar, Satyakala, Priyanka and myself are eagerly waiting for this event. We all gathered the day before and this is the first time that we all team members gathered at same place and hoping for the best to happen the next day. We made all the necessary arrangement at the venue the day before and everyone had put in lot of efforts prior to this event.
Here is June 30, the day of the event and stage is all set for the next three. The participants have started to arrive and suddenly registration desk was filled with many number of people, which was unexpected. Around 200+ people attended this event. The chief guests were arriving one by one and all are seated in the stage. The event started and were hosted by both Ravi Chandrika and Rohini. We felicitated the chief guests and then asked them to present their point of view on Child Sexual Abuse. We launched the 'CRC photo frame' during this event. Then we honoured the supporting NGO - Rotaract Club of Madurai North and UCAN Team. Then it was followed by our chief guests speech. First chairman of CWC - Dr.V.M.Vijaya Saravanan gave us points about CWC and its activities, laws and regulations to prevent and report child abuse crime. Then Sandhiyan from team AWARE started to talk about myths in CSA, how parents are unaware about their child abuse, how their children are affected by strangers, good behavior and safe behavior, direct and indirect abuse, importance of sex education for children. The we gave over the mike to You Turn's Iyan Karthikeyan who also stressed about the significance of sex education and their flaws. He talked about how to transfer the knowledge of menstruation from parents to kids, child marriage is also a form of abuse, honor killing of youngsters, giving respect to women at home and good parenting.
After all the chief guests were done with their time, we had a session on CSA to the audience handled by Revathi and Sharath. In the meantime, participating children were taken to a separate session on CSA which was handled by Aaron. After the session L.Shanmugam, a CWC member honored us on stage for conducting this open session and also for all our activities. After the session we had a panel discussion where Child Line member Ramachandran and CWC members answered to the questions raised by the audience. Many questions were asked and session became more interactive. We collected feedback from the participants. Based on the feedback received we got to know that many were interested to volunteer. Finally, Vigneshwaran concluded the session with special vote of thanks thanking all our chief guests, participants for their presence and volunteers for their support.
The happening of a session was a huge boost for our team. We were overwhelmed by the presence of huge number of participants. This showed us that the people are ready to listen and it our duty to aware them constantly. This will remain as a milestone for us with more such to come. We will keep continuing our work.
Thanks,
Vishnukumar Devadoss
